Named after the Shantang River, Shantang Street dates back to the Tang Dynasty (825 AD) when poet Bai Juyi, serving as Suzhou’s governor, dredged the river to create a direct water route from the city’s northwest to the foot of Tiger Hill. The excavated earth formed a raised embankment, creating a broad road leading to the hill, initially known as Wuqiu and home to Wuqiu Temple. This road, described by Bai Juyi as Wuqiu Temple Road, later became known as Baigong Embankment or Qili Shantang. Positioned between the bustling Changmen area and the famous Tiger Hill, Shantang Street evolved into a vibrant commercial and tourist hub.
