MUSIC, ISLAND, STORIES:POP MUSIC IN TAIWAN
Connecting the past and future of Taiwan and Chinese pop music across generations
This land has been telling stories through songs for more than a hundred years, sweeping across the Chinese-speaking world and affecting billions of lives. Whether in the authoritarian era or today with open values, these musicians and these songs have transcended generations and time and space, broken national boundaries and cities, and vividly left the scent of memory in everyone's life. Whether you are talking about daily life in the market or expressing your feelings for yourself; whether you are a rocker or an angry youth, whether you are a young fresher or a dream chaser, everyone must have a song of their own in their hearts, and they will definitely find their own story here. .
Let us open our ears and eyes, enter the palace of pop music together, listen carefully to the songs belonging to this island, and experience a rich musical journey.
Music has always been around us, and each song has witnessed the turmoil of the times and the change of political power. Every generation has its own song in its heart.
In the early days, ballads could only be passed down by word of mouth; in the 1930s, the needle dropped, the music sounded, and Taiwan had its first popular song. From the "gezaiben" during the Japanese colonial period to radios and phonographs, to the "tune plates" and tapes from street singers and record stores, Taipei Circle has undoubtedly witnessed the early development of Taiwanese pop music and enriched generations of people. ears.
From crystal radios that can be put in your pocket, to black and white to color TV sets, to portable radios and cassette recorders, and of course, cassette players… The small display window of an electrical appliance store also has the same characteristics. A testament to the musical era we have.
"Peach Blossoms Cry Blood" in 1932 is one of the earliest pop songs in Taiwan and is also the theme song of the movie of the same name. Since then, pop music has been deeply connected with the film and television industry. The heyday of the film industry was also the peak period of the record industry, leaving behind countless classic works, such as: A Red Egg, Looking at the Spring Breeze, Hong Kong Night Rain and other popular songs.
With the development of modernization and urbanization, trains carry people who have left their hometowns to pursue their dreams in distant places. This train carries full of dreams and melancholy of leaving their hometowns. The rhythm of the songs accompanies the island from agriculture to industrialization and then back again. To the current modern society dominated by the service industry.
There was a time when young people relied on a guitar, a small songbook and a portable radio to record demos, write their own songs and sing them. These songs reveal strong literary and artistic feelings, and they often incorporate poetry into songs, giving pop music more literary heritage and laying a good foundation for subsequent pop music.
Taiwan's political and social atmosphere gradually loosened in the 1980s, and as a result, many attitude songs were born, echoing the frustrations and anxieties of generations of young people, and also singing about their dreams and innocence, with each word revealing their true feelings. Youthful and passionate.
There is always a song in your life that will sing about your joy, sorrow, hesitation and all the unknown emotions when you are in love. When a familiar song sings, which sweetheart will you think of? Or the same person you once were?
The completion of an album, from creation, arranging, recording, singing, post-production to visual design, marketing and publicity, etc., every link requires the division of labor and cooperation of professional workers. Let's take a look at how an album is produced. Completed.
Taiwan is a land that integrates rich and diverse cultures. In addition to Taiwanese, Hakka, native language songs of aborigines and new residents, Chinese singers from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and other places also regard Taiwan as the most important pop music base. Because of this inclusive spirit, this place is full of lyrical, rock, dance, hip-hop, R&B, electronic music and other genres.
In the 1990s, underground bands sang in humble pubs, and singer-songwriters also began to sing in live houses. Later, these music performance spaces that were once labeled as "underground" and "fringe" have gradually evolved into creative bases for diverse music culture. In recent years, various music festivals and music festivals have attracted tens of thousands of listeners, making their voices heard. Musicians who share similar interests have connected together, and today "independent music" has become the "mainstream" in the minds of young people.
